First Deputy Minister Alexey Vovchenko participated in the second G20 Employment Working Group (EWG) Meeting

First Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Protection of the Russian Federation Alexey Vovchenko participated in the 2nd Employment Working Group meeting during China’s 2016 G-20 Presidency (Shanghai, 26-29, April, 2016).

During this EWG meeting Mr. Vovchenko made a presentation on the Russian experience within the session “Development of More Equitable and Sustainable Social Protection System“. The presentation covered the information on the existing social protection system and main challenges, as well as the current focus areas, requiring special attention for further improvement of the system.

The key issues discussed during the session included:

  • Alignment of social protection policies with employment policies for better and more jobs, to support rational household income growth and domestic demand. The role of activation policies to ensure that benefit recipients with work capacity are encouraged and helped to find work.
  • Expansion of  social security coverage with flexible and inclusive policies and innovative administration and services, in particular, for informal workers, non-standard workers and migrant workers.
  • The role of the social protection floor to ensure the basic livelihood for low-income people and to address economic and social inequality.
  • Sustainability of social security systems, especially in the context of economic slowdowns and ageing.
